The Makeup
A wealthy art curator who loves to dress up but isn't caught up in applying perfect make-up was the look at the Viva Sessions On The Pulse fashion show. "She is straight from Rio or the Bahamas - she's got a little bit of a glow to her skin but very minimal and very polished," M.A.C makeup artist Lochlain Stonehouse explained backstage before the show.
At most shows, artists will apply lipstick using a lip pencil or brush but to create the carefree look for the Viva Sessions it was applied straight from the tube - giving the appearance that each model had painted the colour on herself.
Three matte M.A.C. lip colours were applied to match models’ eye and skin colouring, including the vibrant pink ‘Candy Yum Yum’, the peachy-hued ‘Vegas Vault’ - which was then mattified - and the bright-red ‘Ruby Woo’, while the rest had no colour at all.
To create glowing, flawless skin, Lochlain used a primer and a tiny amount of light-coverage foundation to ensure models’ freckles and skin were still showing through. That was followed by a tiny amount of concealer, with a soft highlighter pressed on to the cheeks and nose. “Almost like a rosy, sun-kissed look, so it looks like she has just come back from the water.”
The Hair
The hair look was created by Emma Bryce, salon director at Stephen Marr Takapuna, who made models look as though they had just towel dried their hair after swimming in the sea. "We really liked the wet-look hair, which had a freshness about it and a beachy feel but I put my own added little twist."
Emma and her team used products from Oribe, which is available exclusively in New Zealand at Stephen Marr salons. Each model had their own hair look, with some worn loose and others pulled into a messy ponytail. To create the look, hair was wet down, followed by the Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil and Oribe Rock Hard Gel. It was then separated into sections and either clipped or tied back; once in place the product dries rock hard.
“Once it was set we scrunched the product in to give it a separated feel and make it look like they’d just come out of the ocean.”
