Katie Holmes' all-American girl next door looks have been amped up in her near two-year turn as the first celebrity face of Bobbi Brown cosmetics. She steps down from the role soon, with fellow actor Kate Upton taking over from August. Before sign-off, Viva asked Holmes for a few beauty tips and found eyeliner was a favourite product.

What is your favourite way to add definition to your look?
I like using eyeliner and mascara. I've always been afraid of applying liquid eyeliner because my hand isn't that steady, but Bobbi's new Perfectly Defined Gel Eyeliner is amazing because it is a gel-pencil eyeliner, which makes it so easy to apply. Plus, the application is so precise, I feel like a pro.

Working with Bobbi Brown what have you learned to make your everyday beauty routines easier?
I love a natural makeup look because it complements my features the best, plus, I like to look as natural as possible and Bobbi's makeup helps me do that. She's taught me so many tricks on how to achieve a flawless, natural-looking complexion with the right skincare and foundation, as well as which colours enhance my features.

For example, as a brunette, blush helps to instantly brighten up my face. I love using Pot Rouge for my lips and cheeks.

What about how to bring extra glamour to your special occasion look?
Sometimes I like to have a little bit of fun, and do a bright lip or something. But I mostly try to keep it as subtle as possible while covering up what needs to be covered up, and highlighting what's working. I still always want to look like me. You have 15 minutes of the red carpet, and then you see everyone you know. If you look like a clown, it's kind of weird. So I like very subtle ... but I love false eyelashes. If I could put them on myself, I would do it every day.

When you look in the mirror these days what do you see _ and wish to see - compared with your beauty aspirations as a teenager?
When I was a teen, I didn't really have a beauty philosophy. I was very focused on school. When I did go out or go to dances, my sister always curled my hair and I would put on lip gloss. That was about it! I'd say I spent most of my 20s trying to look older than I was, which was a mistake in retrospect. Now, in my 30s, it's about accepting who I am and making the right choices to enhance my assets.

Please share a favourite beauty tip?
When I'm going out, I apply eyeliner on the inside of both the top and bottom lid. Bobbi does a great cat eye so it was so fun watching her create my look for the Perfectly Defined campaign [pictured above].
