She's a Beatnik

The cool, rebellious beatnik is inspiration for the latest hair collection from leading Auckland salon d&m and offers pointers for winter styling. Texturised hair in solid colours, including full-on blonde, is forecast.

Led by hair director Danny Pato, the d&m team has given a roughed-up, contemporary twist to the youthful looks of the 1950s  and early 1960s. Beyond the individual spirit of the arty, intellectual beatnik, there are also nods to the mods, biker girls, rebels and screen sirens of the times.

Pato explains this as translating in hair to:• pixie cuts that are soft and frayed around the edges, worn soft and sweeping like Twiggy’s, or matte and textured;• shorter bobs accented with choppy fringes, styled shiny on the top with matte ends;• shoulder length styles, aka “lobs” with textured choppy layers, styled with rock chick/beachy grit;• long hair kept glossy, combining  soft and hard edges, and styled with loose, glamorous waves.

Colour-wise, the solid colours and full-head bleaches that were definite trends of the beatnik era, are in resurgence for winter 2015. “Balayage and ombre have been fading out of fashion for a while, becoming softer and more blended,” says Pato. “We are now heading back toward more solid colour looks with subtle shimmers of light and depth.”

Full-on blonde is back, while darker tones are rich and shiny. Whether hair is light or dark, a client’s natural colouring should be taken into account to determine if a warm, cool or neutral reflect would work best. “Everyone is unique, so make sure you work in tandem with your colourist to select shades that truly complement you,” says Pato. For full-on blonde, he recommends looking out for a colourist who uses a new US product called Olaplex (coming to New Zealand later this month), which he says will help prevent hair breakage.
