When Christopher Kane, the designer credited with reviving London Fashion Week, got together with makeup maestro Francois Nars, a bold collaboration was guaranteed.

The two have come up with Neoneutral, a limited-edition cosmetics collection that nicely encapsulates both their approaches. The pair have worked together backstage for six seasons, and appreciate each other’s love of mixed mediums, strong shades and iridescent detailing.

Kane drew on recurring ideas from his label’s founding in 2007 through to the present day, including a colour palette that features neons and nudes. “Neon is a huge part of the Christopher Kane identity, so much so that it has become a neutral. To truly express the nature of the brand, there was no question that it had to be an integral part of this beauty collection.”

This is seen in lip glosses that, though brightly coloured, go on with a translucent shine. Kane’s favourite item is the Violet Atom Illuminating Multiple which was used to give the models luminosity at his spring 2015 show. These multi-use highlight sticks are a Nars staple, but given a colour twist by Kane, who says this gives the wearer an ethereal or celestial look.

Kane says his design work relies on instinct and draws on what surrounds him, rather than any deliberate seeking of bright ideas. “I like for inspiration to find me it’s a very natural and personal thing.” He credits his Scottish upbringing for his strong work ethic and hopes the brand, now part-owned by French luxury conglomerate Kering, will grow further, following the opening of a first London store in March.
