1. The Body Laid Bare: Masterpieces from Tate
This weekend is a great one to visit the Auckland Art Gallery's latest exhibition, with various free events. On Saturday afternoon the gallery will screen the 1930 film The Blue Angel, starring Marlene Dietrich as a cabaret dancer, and on Sunday at 2pm, the documentary Embrace by Australian body image activist Taryn Brumfitt. Before the movie, Dr Misha Kavka, associate dean of media and communication at the University of Auckland, will discuss "the eroticisation of the gaze and the ethics of looking".

2. Petra Cortright
A favourite of Stella McCartney, digital artist Petra Cortright is in Wellington this weekend for the opening of her new exhibition Running Neo-Geo Games Under Mame - featuring paintings on linen and paper, video paintings and YouTube webcam performances. Once described as the "Monet of the 21st Century", Petra first gained recognition a decade ago via YouTube videos that explored found software and self-portrait. Read our interview with the artist.

3. African Film Festival
Expand your horizons by watching a film on the programme at the African Film Festival, on in Auckland this weekend. With a selection of films that aim to advance understanding of African cultures and increase recognition for African film-makers in New Zealand, the festival features 10 films that examine immigration, motherhood, sexual politics and Western influence on African cultures.

4. Emotional Creature: The Secret Life of Girls Around the World
The latest from American playwright and activist Eve Ensler, known for her award-winning play The Vagina Monologues, this performance explores the mash-up of emotions young women across the globe are experiencing amid political turmoil and inequality. This local performance, directed by Forrest Denize, features a diverse cast of six women performing monologues, poetry and more.

5. Garnet Station Cafe's Tiny Theatre Open Day
Garnet Station Cafe's Tiny Theatre has a new lease of life, with a fresh coat of paint, some new drapes, and a new manager - Auckland Theatre Company co-founder Teresa Sokolich. See it for yourself on its free open day on Saturday, and enjoy entertainment from roving artists and musicians, storytelling, a gourmet sausage sizzle, face-painting and more.

6. Eco Day
The finale of the Eco West festival, with live music, workshops (like how to keep urban chooks), yoga and meditation sessions and more to help you live a more sustainable life. Head to the "zero waste foodcourt" featuring the likes of Little Yellow Food Truck, Brooklyn Dogs and Double Dutch Fries, and the market of fair trade, organic and upcycled products.
