1. March for Science
A celebration of science and the vital role that it plays in all aspects of life – the environment, health, society – show your support by joining the global movement on Saturday, which is also Earth Day. Inspired by the Women's March, the movement was mooted following Donald Trump's inauguration as a "pushback to the Trump administration's seeming stifling of scientists and outright denial of manmade climate change".

2. Girlboss
Based on Nasty Gal founder Sophia Amoruso's 2014 autobiography of the same name, season one of Girlboss, the TV show, premieres on Netflix this weekend. It stars Britt Robertson as Sophia, who finds success online selling vintage clothing on eBay. Expect plenty of style inspiration – and a cameo appearance from RuPaul.

3. When Dreams Turn to Gold: The Benson & Hedges and Smokefree Fashion Design Awards 1964-1998
Looking back at the glamour and legacy of the famed fashion awards, this exhibition, featuring garments showcased, footage and more, also offers a history of New Zealand fashion from the 60s to late 90s – a must-visit for local fashion fans.

4. High Flown Fashion: Women Pilots and the Selling of Aviation, 1909-39
A visit from fashion academic Madelyn Shaw, curator of textiles at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington D.C., will see her host various talks across the country – including a focus on historic female pilots and how their clothes helped them promote aviation during its "golden age". Madelyn will also be hosting lectures on textiles and 'exoticism' in fashion in Wellington and Dunedin next week.

5. Record Store Day 
Saturday is the tenth anniversary of global celebration Record Store Day, with several events planned across New Zealand to "celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store". Support your local in Auckland, with events and live performances at Flying Out on Pitt St, Southbound Records in Eden Terrace, Conch in Ponsonby, Real Groovy on Queen St and more.

Don't miss the 'Breakfast with The Clean' art package at Real Groovy, with original band members contributing artwork that has been printed onto tea towels, mugs and plates – with proceeds going to The New Zealand Music Foundation.
