Hudson Boutique Offers a European Edge

Ioanna Kourbela bolero available from Hudson.

Down a little cobbled lane in Central Auckland, in a white-painted brick, subterranean store, there’s a boutique offering a truly international shopping experience.

Hudson specialises in mostly European brands and is owned by Jacquie Hudson, a former television journalist, who immersed herself in fashion after finding Greek label Ioanna Kourbela while travelling in Europe.

“I love the casual yet sophisticated nature of her clothing. It’s an aesthetic that really suits New Zealand women,” she says.

Star pieces from the line include a gorgeous cotton wrap that can be worn myriad ways and is stocked every season in a new colour palette.

“They are the quintessential trans-seasonal piece every woman needs in our changeable climate. Perfect to keep rolled up in your bag for travelling,” says Jacquie.

Other standout pieces include minimal black and coffee-toned shifts, modernist bomber jackets and flattering ribbed cotton knits.

Each piece from this Athens-based label is designed and manufactured in Greece, and is in line with fair wage rules in Greece. Jacquie has enjoyed meeting the cutters and seamstresses of the family-owned business and tries to visit Athens regularly to stay in touch with the family, who have been in the rag trade for more than 40 years.

“It’s so nice to know the designer. She’s really more an artist and you can see it in her designs. The collection will always follow a story — sometimes she’s inspired by a piece of art or a poem.”

Another interesting label stocked at Hudson is Gestuz, a Danish label that has a cult following in Europe and is known for their rock and roll aesthetic. Think textured finishes, leather and playful prints.

“This season we love the olive silk shirt with gold stitching, the plaid ponchos and burnt butter leather pants,” says Jacquie.

Even though Europe is a focus at Hudson, New Zealand designers aren’t forgotten.

“We are so excited to be the exclusive New Zealand stockist of Kay Goss, a clever Kiwi designer who mostly sells her line in America. It’s been worn by the likes of Lady Gaga and Kesha.”

Goss is known for her minimalist, body-conscious clothing in subtle black and white hues. There’s a classic but sexy edge to her designs.

“We can offer custom orders, as Kay is based here in Auckland. So if you have trouble getting the right fit we can perfect this for you.”

Jacquie explains their following in New Zealand and Australia is based on the premise of giving women the chance to wear gorgeous, high quality garments. And she only ever brings in one or two items in each style.

Personal service is also high on her agenda. The passion Jacquie feels for clothing is translated into a complimentary styling service for customers,.

"We are here to help with all facets of your wardrobe. You can book in for a styling session or shop after hours with a glass of bubbles."

Women are encouraged to invest in quality items, rather than follow the current trend to buy and throw out.

“A good coat can last you 10 years — our grandmothers used to buy like that, and so do Europeans.”

And once you own a beautiful piece, wear it for everyday she advises. “Kiwi women tend to be very practical, whereas we encourage women to wear the best you have everyday. So throw on that sequined top, a few sparkles never hurt,” she laughs.
