There are so many great ways to celebrate Mother’s Day and make your mum feel special and honoured, but none go straight to the heart of the matter faster than cooking for her.

Why not share the love potluck-style this Mother’s Day?

I’m on a mission to get everyone potlucking this winter – it’s such an easy way to get together with family and friends, and Mother’s Day is the perfect excuse. Here are a few tips for making mum’s day:

1. Potluck can be as casual or as elaborate as you like – choose from a morning tea, casual brunch or lunch, or even the full-on Sunday roast.

2. Don't forget Mother's Day is grandma's day too – get the generations together to celebrate.

3. Ask all the siblings, cousins or grandchildren to bring a plate. If there are only a few of you, you might like to allocate everyone a dish or a course. If there's a tribe, take potluck and see what turns up!

4. Try to include your mum's favourite foods or plan a menu around all those family favourite dishes you grew up with. For people like my sister and I, whose mother is no longer around, a nice way to honour her memory is to cook some of those family favourite dishes for your own family.

5. Mums never grow out of enjoying showing off their kids to their friends, so invite a couple of her close friends along too – especially if they don't have kids of their own to make their day special.

6. Set a pretty table to make it feel like more of an occasion. This is the time to get out that heirloom tablecloth and dust off the good tea set.

7. Don't forget the music. Get the kids to practice a song together or set up a playlist of tunes you remember from your childhood to take mum on a trip down memory lane.

8. Indulge in a little nostalgia. Get out the family photo albums to flick through or line up some old home videos.

9. I know I'll be going out to the garden on Mother's Day to pick a little posy for the table – it's what my mother always did to make our house feel so warm and welcoming.

10. Take a photo of any dishes you've made from my new Share the Love winter annual for your Mother's Day potluck and share them on my website to be in to win a gourmet weekend for two in Wanaka, including a long lunch at my place!
