10 Places Serving Posh Pizza

La-di-da! Nothing beats a fresh pizza on a cold night but skip the pineapple and spaghetti for something a little fancier

Il Buco
Offering up to 30 different flavours sold by the slice, Il Buco's Roman-style pizzas are topped with simple, thoughtful combinations that don't always include cheese. There's a host of vegan and vegetarian and gluten-free options to keep everyone happy. 113 Ponsonby Rd, Ponsonby

SPQR
If it's too hard to choose between the dozen delights on offer at SPQR, take our word for it and order the eggplant pizza with zucchini, capsicum, roasted garlic, capers, olives, fresh rosemary and goat's cheese. 150 Ponsonby Rd, Ponsonby

Nomad
On the menu at Mediterranean-inspired Nomad you'll find lahmacun: Turkish flatbread topped with beef mince, tomato and capsicum paste and paprika. There are a number of other flavourful combinations, and for $40 you can cosy up by their fire with a pizza to share and a two glasses of red. 5 Pt Chevalier Rd, Pt Chevalier

Prego
This Ponsonby institution has a dreamy pizza menu, which includes a deep-dish calzone filled with chorizo, ham, chicken, caramelised onion, chilli and pear relish. 226 Ponsonby Rd, Ponsonby

Settebello
Recommended to us by several trusted sources as one of the best pizza joints in the 'burbs, Settebello was opened by Naples-native Francesco Acri to bring a bit of Napoli to New Lynn. They do things the right way here, with authentic Italian ingredients, slow-proved dough and a scorching hot woodfire oven. 3/1 Rata St, New Lynn

The Store
Each day The Store has both a vege and butcher's choice pizzette available for one of the best meals you could hope for on a lunch run. Sister restaurant Amano is also nearby, and often offers up fresh pizza by the slice from its amazing bakery. 5B Gore St, Britomart

Papa's Pizza, Kingsland. Picture / Dean Purcell

Papa's Pizza
This Kingsland favourite has been around for decades, and we hope it stays that way. Its pizzas are made on wholemeal semolina bases, with one of the more interesting toppings being slow-cooked pork with jalapenos, coriander, brie and spinach. Add a side of arancini and/or polenta chips for good measure. 61 Sandringham Rd, Kingsland

Dantes Pizzeria
With a beatifully simple and authentic menu, you'll find Dantes Pizzeria tucked away in Ponsonby Central. It's currently rennovating its kitchen so it can add handmade pasta to the menu, and are set to re-open very soon. Trust us, it will be worth the wait. 136 Ponsonby Rd, Ponsonby

Stumpys Woodfired Pizza
If you're looking for a pizza to whisk home and eat by the fire, Stumpys is a great option. Pick one made with fresh buffalo mozzarella, such as the Veg Out with artichoke, capers, mushroom and red peppers or the Proscuitto with rocket and mushrooms. 702 Dominion Rd, Mt Eden

Gorgeous Pizza
While the pizzas at Gorgeous are oddly named after models, underneath the strange marketing the food is delicious. We can recommend the Eva, topped with chargrilled chicken, roasted potato, mozzarella, garlic and herb butter sauce. Feel free to refer to it as the "chicken and potato one". 327 Dominion Rd, Mt Eden
