Lewis Road’s Latest Innovation Best Enjoyed After Dark

It’s the smell that gets you first: premium chocolate, fresh hazelnut, a touch of white pepper and hints of cashew. Then with the first sip comes creamy decadence, which soon gives way to rich layers of chocolate and warm spice, all with a velvety mouth-feel.

Be one of the first to try Lewis Road Creamery’s new Chocolate Cream Liqueur, another of the innovative Kiwi company’s game-changers on the New Zealand dairy landscape following in the footsteps of its wildly successful milks, creams, custards, butters and icecreams.

The versatile chocolate liqueur - best served as chilled as possible over ice or icecream, or even in coffee and cocktails - comes in sleek gold aluminum bottles inspired by the milk bottles of the 1880s.

Each bottle comes with an Oritain traceability seal to certify its authenticity and origin, and to ensure it remains adults only is sealed with push and twist cap, which the company believes its is a world first for an alcoholic beverage.

Smooth and creamy, the liqueur contains fresh New Zealand cream, the finest 54% Belgian chocolate and triple distilled premium spirits, with an alcohol content of 17 per cent. It’s the first time that the boundary-pushing company has moved out of the supermarket realm and into adults-only territory, but the move was a no-brainer for Lewis Road founder Peter Cullinane.

“We’re all about innovation and finding new ways to pay homage to our dairy heritage and this cream liqueur delivers on our mission,” he says.

Top bartender Lori Bahr, the company’s brand ambassador and the bar manager at Ponsonby’s Bedford Soda and Liquor, has created a bespoke cocktail recipe from the liqueur using port, lemon, bitters and strawberries, which she says is “reminiscent of a Silver Fizz”.

Lori says the Lewis Road Strawberry Fizz cocktail will challenge people’s perception of the liqueur category.

“Not only does it pair perfectly with strawberries, but it also stands alone and doesn’t reflect the traditional way a chocolate liqueur is used,” she explains. “The port and strawberry complement each other beautifully and both are natural pairs with chocolate, super approachable and a guaranteed favourite.

The fresh cream in the liqueur really stands out, she says, and with chocolate being such a versatile flavor, it’s easy to match it with fresh local produce to create great cocktails.

“It is unexpectedly uplifting and fresh.”

The liqueur, which is now available from Glengarry's and Liquorland outlets and online sites, can also be found on the drinks menus of select bars and restaurants around the country. For a full list, go to nightcreamery.co.nz
