How To Wear: Dresses With Sneakers

No longer the domain of the office commuter, sneakers and dresses are looking better than ever

The "ugly sneaker" trend is showing no signs of disappearing, and the latest iteration to be seen everywhere is one with an oh-so-easy velcro strap or two. Go for black rather than white velcro sneakers, like these ones from Prada - it stops them from looking too 'retirement home'. This autumn-friendly dress from H&M is a wearable spin on one of the season's most popular colours, tomato red.

H&M dress $80. Prada sneakers $1205. Hansel from Basel socks, $46, from Smith and Caughey's. Karen Walker necklace $239.

Give a floaty, flowing white dress some street-cred by wearing it with a pair of classic sneakers, like these ones from Vans. Pairing the sneakers with matchy-matchy socks not only looks cute but also visually brings them up the leg, so you can cheat the look of hi-tops without buying two pairs of shoes.

Mahsa dress $840. Glassons bag $50. Vans Authentic sneakers $100. Hansel From Basel socks $46, from Smith and Caughey's.

The season's favourite voluminous sleeves work well when pared with a less-than-girly colour - add some vampy interest to your look with some black fishnets, and the addition of a pair of New Balance kicks will instantly stop you from looking too tarted up.

Karen Walker dress $470. Levante fishnet tights, $25, from Farmers. New Balance sneakers $150.

Why not go all out with a 90s vibe when donning your Converse sneakers? Pair a Kate Moss-esque slip dress layered over a grungy skate tshirt with some sunnies that would have made Kurt Cobain proud.

Shjark dress $279. Checks Downtown T-shirt $80. Glassons sunglasses $25. Converse sneakers $100.

A dress made for frolicking, if ever there was one, this Apiece Apart wrap-dress is sweetly complemented by some clean white and blue sneakers from Veja and the contrasting print of a silk scarf from Dries Van Noten.

Apiece Apart dress, $750, from Muse. Dries Van Noten scarf worn on head, $280, from Scotties. Mars earrings $70. Veja sneakers, $229, from Good as Gold.

Lean in to the season's pastels with a head-to-toe homage to the palette. This Twenty-Seven Names dress could easily be layered over a fine-knit jumper for colder weather, and although Allbirds shoes can be worn without socks, they look so darn cute with these matching pink ones from H&M.

Twenty-Seven Names dress $430. Caroline Sills shirt $319. H&M Conscious Exclusive socks $25 (twin pack). Allbirds sneakers $160. Mars earrings $70.
