AVANT-GARDE UPDATE

Australian super-stylist Benni Tognini demonstrated his avant-garde approach and creative styling at New Zealand’s premiere hair event, Industry 2015.

As a global judge of the Goldwell's Colour Zoom competition and a Goldwell master with a long career, Tognini and the salon colour specialist brand told Viva they were forecasting a winter of bold colour in surprising mixes, such as violet and copper together or used with greens.

Dialled down versions of the cuts and colours presented on the runway would filter through to salons, he says. “In particular, deep, blood reds that are more universally flattering than fiery shades and oranges.”

Colours are trending true, rather than the washed out ombre or all-over shades of lilac and pink that have been prevalent for several seasons. Blondes are in muted yet saturated beige shades, which Goldwell refers to as “trenchcoat tones”.

Tognini, based in Brisbane, says professional application over home dye jobs allows for “a subtleness, but using more primary tones”. Shine, matte and textural variation enlivens colour work. “Intelligent colour is about placement.” Trained stylists are able to match this to their client’s face shape and personal style for an individualised look. “The face is the picture, the hair is the frame,” says Tognini, who encourages changing the frame for seasonal updates.

Auckland salon Vada also presented a show with strong colour work and a punk ethos at Industry, led by director Guy Roberts and senior stylist Lauren Gunn.

Joining the Vada team and 22 models on stage were New Zealand band Die! Die! Die! and aerosol artist Otis Frizzell.

PRIZEWINNING PORTFOLIO

This trio of short shapes showing Mana Dave’s hair artistry won him the now-familiar title of New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year at the Industry 2015 Awards this month. Dave, of Blaze salon in Newmarket, is a much-awarded stylist and regular hair competition entrant who was also named educator of the year.

Grant Bettjeman was inducted into the Industry Hall of Fame and a number of other awards were also made.

TOOL TIME

The fashion for curly hair has seen the return of an old favourite hair tool, updated for easier use. Heated rollers are an effective DIY way to put some bounce in your style and an alternative to wielding curling tongs or irons. These days they heat up fast and you can go about your makeup while they do their job.

We like Vidal Sassoon’s Secret Curl hot rollers which simply snap shut, meaning you don’t need to struggle to secure them with clips. The silicone rollers won’t damage hair with excessive heat and the lightweight set contains 12 in two different sizes. Find them priced at $119.99, exclusively at Farmers until April and then also at Harvey Norman and Betta Electrical stores.
