Watch Serial Mom
Avondale favourite The Hollywood is screening John Water’s 1994 comedy crime thriller Serial Mom as a special Mother’s Day offering. Suburban housewife Beverly Stuphin (Kathleen Turner) appears to be an exemplary parent. Unbeknownst to her family, she’ll go to great, murderous lengths for them. Sunday May 8 at 6.30pm (doors open 5.30pm). Tickets are available from Hollywoodavondale.nz

Hear Anthonie Tonnon live
The ever-stylish artist brings his charming, dramatically tinted album Leave Love Out Of This across the country this month, with live, band-accompanied shows in Christchurch (May 6), Dunedin (May 7), Auckland (May 14), Wellington (May 20) and Whanganui (May 21). Tickets are available from Anthonietonnon.com/tickets

Check out Lilypad
Alternative band The Veils, pop powerhouse Bic Runga, folk singer Nadia Reid and newcomer Arahi are coming together for a free (but encouraged gig-by-donation) show at Mt Smart Stadium’s boutique venue, Lilyworld, on May 8. Register your tickets via Moshtix.co.nz

Listen to Wet Leg's new album
This instantly infectious debut album from the Isle of Wight duo is full of wry lyrics, ridiculously catchy indie bangers and a healthy wallop of clever oddity. It's impossible to resist and will go down as a true modern classic.

Read French Braid by Anne Tyler (Penguin, $35)
Set between 1959 and late 2020, the Booker Prize-shortlisted author’s family saga has been hailed as warm, funny and generous, a multigenerational drama rife with family tensions as they unspool over the decades with an uncanny sense of life’s details. Available from all good bookshops.

BOOK AHEAD
