Scratch A Cenotaph
A far cry from the hipster ceramics movement, Peter Hawksby’s sculptural creations are textured, idiosyncratic and enigmatic. The familiar face behind beloved St Kevins Arcade cafe Alleluyah for 20 years, Peter has also been something of a cult figure in New Zealand ceramics since the late 1970s and 80s. After the closure of Alleluyah in 2015, he returned to his sculpting roots and his latest exhibition, Scratch A Cenotaph, is now showing at Anna Miles Gallery. The pieces are each related to important people in Peter’s life — cenotaph meaning an empty monument created to honour people whose remains are elsewhere, and many of the nuanced works contain reworked components of Peter’s creations from the late 1970s.
When: Until Friday June 8   Where: Anna Miles Gallery, 10/30 Upper Queen St, City   Visit: Annamilesgallery.com
