Auckland-based brand Georgia Alice presented its first Resort collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia today, the only New Zealand label with a solo show in Sydney this year.

Designer Georgia Currie sent 27 looks down the runway at Sydney’s Carriageworks, her first time presenting a standalone show at MBFWA.

The Resort 16/17 range drew inspiration from Swiss artist Mai-Thu Perret’s 17-year project The Crystal Frontier, made up of various works that chronicle a group of women who decide to escape society and start a feminist commune in the New Mexico desert.

“They set their own rules and walk their own beat,” Georgia explained before the show. “This resonated with me, I want to take the Georgia Alice tribe on a similar journey.”

Georgia’s show was styled by Vogue Australia’s fashion editor and market director Philippa Moroney. The designer also collaborated with fellow Auckland-based brand Meadowlark on a jewellery range to accompany her collection, with models wearing oversized hoop earrings featuring 76 hand-set gemstones, plus simpler versions.

Based on Meadowlark’s eternity ring, a limited edition run of the earrings will be available exclusively on Georgia Alice’s website when her collection is available later this year.

“I felt like jewellery was a perfect development for the brand, it's the finishing touch which elevates clothing to something more spectacular,” says Georgia.

Robyn Catinella, of Sydney PR company Catinella, who represents Australian fashion brands and stores including Carla Zampatti, Parlour X and Bianca Spender, took on Georgia as a client earlier this year. She says Georgia, who is now stocked at department store Myer, is making waves in Australia’s fashion market.

“We have not seen industry excitement from buyers, editors or influencers both locally and globally for a designer in years,” says Robyn.

Today's MBFWA show tops off a successful time for Georgia: last year she was named Elle Australia's Emerging Designer of the Year, and her designs have been worn by the likes of musician Solange and influential blogger Leandra Medine from website The Man Repeller.
