In the late 90s, during a brief stint as a model, Bridie Picot's first job was for Kate Sylvester, when she was photographed in the dunes at Karekare beach by Wayne Conway.

Although Bridie has since moved to New York, where she founded homeware and design studio Thing Industries in 2013, she reconnected with Kate late last year and Thing x Sylvester was born. This is a collaboration that sees the down-to-earth aesthetic of Kate Sylvester's diffusion line and "naughty little sister" Sylvester, paired with Thing's witty take on objects for the home.

The result is four practical yet playful pieces: from a cactus wall hook ($39), ensuring you never lose your keys again, to a birdhouse bookshelf ($129), in a signature Kate Sylvester print, which has a roof that doubles as a page holder.

“It’s a woodgrain print that we have returned to a few times,” Kate says. “It first appeared in the ‘Home’ winter 2000 collection, inspired by interiors, then for summer 2009, we put it into “fake” colours. It’s been wall panels and upholstery in stores, carry bags and now a beach towel.”

The range is available from Kate Sylvester stores, plus online at katesylvester.com and thingindustries.com.
