BERRIES, BASIL AND LIME COCONUT YOGHURT BREAKFAST SMOOTHIE
Makes: 1 large glass. Preparation time: 5 minutes.

"This covers all the nutritional and flavour notes you want in a morning smoothie," Little Bird's Megan May explains. "The balance of tart flavours with healthy fats is incredibly refreshing and alkalising for your body first thing in the morning.

"It’s got no banana or other sweet fruits, which can be a nice change and a great option for anyone who is avoiding the sweet life for a period of time. It instead relies on avocado and coconut yoghurt to give it a lovely creamy texture and the berries and basil for mild sweet flavour. There is an option of adding in a little raw honey or medjool dates if you can’t be without a little sweetness in your smoothies.

"Nutritionally you’re getting a boost of antioxidant rich berries, vitamin c from the lime, chlorophyll, iron and fibre from your kale and basil, good healthy skin fats from the avocado and coconut, (plus probiotics and a little immune boost from the raw honey if you’re using it). There is a lot to like about this delicious morning smoothie.”

Ingredients
Handful of roughly torn kale or spinach
5-6 leaves of fresh basil or mint
2 Tbsp avocado
2 tablespoons coconut yogurt
½ fresh lime peeled
1 cup of mixed frozen berries
¾ cup of filtered water or coconut water

Optional extras
1 tsp raw honey or 1 medjool date for a hint of sweetness.

Method

BEETROOT AND BERRIES ENERGISING SMOOTHIE
Makes: 1 large glass. Preparation time: 5 minutes.

“This stunningly vibrant smoothie is slightly earthy, not too sweet and a little bit tangy, all while packing itself with anthocyanins and betalains which are plant pigments that will keep your cells vibrant and young," Megan says.

"Beetroot and berries are surprisingly delicious together. Sneaking veggies in your smoothies is a great way of increasing your daily intake and there is no need to worry about the texture of your veggie smoothie — the Vitamix can make anything smooth and you won’t even know the beetroot is in there.

"Beetroot has been shown to increase the performance of athletes due to its ability to increase your blood flow capacity and lower the amount of oxygen your muscles need. This makes this smoothie a great choice for a refreshing and energising pre-work-out drink.”

Ingredients
½ cup beetroot, peeled and roughly chopped
1/3 cup frozen raspberry or strawberry
1/3 cup almond milk
¼ tsp vanilla powder or extract
1 frozen banana
1/3 cup water
1/3 cup ice

¼ tsp camu camu

Method
1. Place all the ingredients in the order listed into the Vitamix and secure the lid.

2. Select Smoothie program and blend until completely smooth (45 seconds).

3. Pour into a glass and enjoy.
