Abercrombie & Fitch First Instinct 50ml eau de toilette $78. Try your luck with this at the after-match function. A summery gin and tonic accord with melon and citrus, backed up with a sprinkling of pepper and a dash of violet leaf on a soft musky amber base.
Michael Kors Extreme Blue 70ml eau de toilette $130. Would wear well in a smart clubroom. This fresh aromatic fragrance is without the obvious oceanic notes the bottle colour usually suggests. Inhale citrus, spice, juniper and warm woods.
Kenzo Homme 50ml eau de parfum $115. Intense woody marine fragrance with notes of cardamom, mint and sage, anchored with vetiver, vanilla and cedar. Echoes, but updates, the 1991 original in both aroma and striking bottle design.
Issey Miyake L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme Fraiche 100ml eau de toilette $144. When Miyake’s airy and fresh fragrances debuted more than 20 years ago they were a revelation. Aquatic, citrus, woody compositions like this new edition are now more common, but few have such a crisp light touch.
Montblanc Legend Spirit 100ml eau de toilette $125. The smart white flask makes this stand out more than the appealing, but not unusual woody, aquatic, aromatic mix within. Still, like carrying one of the brand’s pricey pens in your suit pocket, professionals know that visible details get noticed.
Guerlain L’Homme Ideal 100ml eau de parfum $147. This woody oriental fragrance is soft, creamy and a little sweet, thanks to almond, leather and vanilla notes. It has more old-world charm than the eau de toilette, but without getting all intense about it.
Narciso Rodriguez For Him Bleu Noir 100ml eau de toilette $150. With musk at its heart — like all Narciso Rodriguez’s fragrances — this is an antidote to the male scent world’s usual citrus overdose. There’s freshness nonetheless, from cedar, and depth from spices, including cardamom.
Jimmy Choo Man Intense 100ml eau de toilette $139. Without trying to reinvent the wheel, favoured male fragrance notes such as lavender, pepper, geranium and tonka bean are supplemented with melon, orange and patchouli. Makes for a moreish appeal.
Givenchy Gentlemen Only Absolute 100ml eau de parfum $167. This Absolute version has the warm, sweet enveloping aroma popular in European men’s fragrances, thanks to bergamot, cinnamon, sandalwood and vanilla. Like most in this rich category, it would be best worn before the weather warms up, or of an evening.
Acqua di Parma Colonia Club 50ml eau de cologne $163. Heritage — from the Art Deco bottle and classic Italian perfumery notes — is a strong suit of Acqua di Parma. This latest launch seeks to conjure up the spirit of a gentlemen’s sports club. It’s one to wear to fit in rather than stand out, but nicely fresh with mint and lavender.
Bulgari Man Black Cologne 60ml eau de toilette $103. For the last Rugby World Cup, Bulgari collaborated with the All Blacks on a limited edition Man in Black tattoo imprint bottle. This new cologne has the same generous tot of rum, but with green and citrusy notes and more sandalwood, making it a fresher combination.
Diesel Only the Brave Extreme 75ml eau de toilette $133. Packing a punch indeed, this has the citrus hit of many sporty scents, plus fresh apple, but then is a melange of leather, rose and coriander with a woody oriental base, heavy on tonka bean and patchouli.
Giorgio Armani Code Profumo 60ml eau de parfum $128. Sophistication is an Armani byword, yet this fragrance is more obvious than you might expect. It has a definite warmth and sweetness, suggesting the courting of a younger customer. Top notes of mandarin and green apple are new to the Code family, but Profumo retains the alluring tonka bean base, with added amber sensuality.
Jo Malone London Black Cedarwood & Juniper 100ml cologne $220. Delve into the world of Jo Malone and find unisex aromas that aren’t subsumed by multiple ingredients. Individual notes stand out, making picking what you like easier. In this case cumin, juniper and cedarwood are the stars.
Versace Pour Homme Dylan Blue 40ml eau de toilette $102 This Mediterranean blue bottle houses an aromatic woody fragrance that nods to the hit Dior Sauvage, but is more citrusy, a la Bleu de Chanel. Throw in some pepper, fig, incense and patchouli and, like wearing a Versace print shirt, you won’t go un-noticed.
