Chanel's 2017/2018 Métiers d'Art Campaign is an Ode to Hamburg
The luxury brand pays homage to its specialist craftspeople and ateliers
In a world of fast fashion and merry-go-round fashion shows that often leave you feeling perplexed about what season you’re actually buying for, slowing down and taking time to appreciate the finer details is a welcome reminder when it comes to consuming fashion.
For its 2017/2018 Métiers d'Art collection available from next month worldwide, Chanel put the spotlight once again on the small specialist ateliers owned by the brand, and whose craft and traditions the house preserves, celebrating the niche suppliers that supply the brand each season, including lacemakers, button makers and embroidery ateliers.
The annual spectacular (this collection being the 16th) is presented outside the traditional fashion schedule, with past locations including Rome, Dallas, Edinburgh, Mumbai and New York. This latest Métiers d'Art collection returned to the brand’s creative director Karl Lagerfeld’s hometown of Hamburg at the city’s new opera house Elbphilharmonie. "Hamburg was always kind of discreet. It's not a red carpet city," said the designer post-show.
"Hamburg people - they never showed how rich they were but they were very rich.” The latest campaign, photographed by the 84-year old designer, features model and muse Anna Ewers, and highlights the collection’s nautical influences, a constant source of archival inspiration dating back to the brand’s iconic founder Coco Chanel.
